Western Spirit – Dowling Shield Squad 2009 After a lengthy trial period, Dowling shield coaches, Jeff Dean and Ivo Havard with the assistance of the evergreen and astute Terry Stanley, have had the extremely difficult job of narrowing the squad down to 13 players from an original squad of approximately 40 well credentialed and talented players from the Western Region. The coaching staff are very pleased with the way the boys conducted themselves throughout the trial period. The unfortunate part is that in the end, only 13 boys can be chosen which leaves a couple of the lads very, very unlucky to miss out. Nevertheless, as Jeff Dean pointed out, the recent Victorian 2nds game in Sydney had two players (Sarna, Forsyth) who missed out on Dowling shield representation for their respective region but have taken all before them to represent Victoria at 2nd eleven level. The coaching staff are now looking forward to putting in the hard yards in the preparation for the Dowling shield which begins in Mid January 2009. Four training sessions at Merv Hughes oval and a practice game against North West Wizards will allow the boys to refine their skills and develop as a team. The Footscray Edgewater Cricket Club wishes the coaches and the boys the very best luck in the Dowling shield.
